About

The Villa-Legodi Centre for Sculpture is a partnership between the Claire and Edoardo Villa Will Trust and the NIROX Foundation Trust.

It is a generative space for artists, curators, writers, and cultural practitioners to create and share. Its objective is to foster the arts, especially sculpture, by enabling the production of new works, and to pay tribute to the life and work of Edoardo Villa and his long-time collaborator Lucas Legodi.

Villa’s humanist concerns, vitality, and experimental approach to art-making are reflected in the Centre’s multifaceted programme of residencies, exhibitions, publications, workshops, talks, and educational initiatives.

The Centre’s programme is intentionally organic, echoing Villa’s view that each sculpture forms part of a continuous process. We support artists working in a wide range of media by providing space, tools, resources, and expert assistance.

We exist as part of a community, providing a platform for education and research, enriching critical debate and the appreciation of sculpture.

Workshop

The Workshop accommodates a versatile range of practices and mediums at all levels of production, from cutting, carving, and grinding to welding, modelling, firing, casting, assembling, buffing, and stitching. The workshop is well-ventilated, both through its 4.8 x 7 metre wide entrance and its dust extraction system. It is also equipped to handle the production of heavy works, and structured to enable easy access and manoeuvrability, with a raised concrete slab outside for those who prefer to work in the open air.

Project Space

The Project Space doubles as both an exhibition and studio space, depending on the needs of each artist. Artists can use this space to exhibit pre-existing works, works in progress, process drawings, or archival research, serving as an incubator for ideas and a bridge between the workshop and general public. The clean environment also enables artists to draw or produce other kinds of work within this space. In pursuit of the Centre’s educational initiatives, the Project Space is intentionally flexible, providing a platform for workshops, talks, screenings, readings, and performances.

Education Hub

The Education Hub includes an evolving library and archive. It is furnished with couches, tables, and a computer, providing a comfortable space to sit, read, write, and converse. It is a space from which artists, writers, curators, researchers, academics, students, and art enthusiasts can draw inspiration. The archive focuses on the work of Edoardo Villa and Lucas Legodi. The library focuses on the arts in the context of philosophy, ecology, history, politics, curation, and museum studies, with a particular emphasis on sculpture. It also includes publications produced by the Centre and visiting artists.
